If the Kings end up moving him, the logic could be that they prefer him at power forward and they see Cousins and Willie Cauley-Stein as the frontcourt of the future. This team already struggles to score, and his presence takes some pressure off of Cousins. Unlike when the Memphis Grizzlies and Toronto Raptors traded Gay years ago, I doubt Sacramento would improve without him. This year, Gay is averaging 18 points on 47 percent shooting, but his 3-point percentage has dropped and he's not getting to the free throw line as much as usual. He signed a three-year, $40 million extension in 2014, but there's reason to believe he would opt out at the end of next season and sign a long-term deal under the new salary cap at the age of 31. The Kings are half a game out of the playoffs, and Gay is their second-leading scorer behind DeMarcus Cousins. (Gay, 29, is scheduled to earn $13.3 million from the Kings next season before he's forced to decide on a $14.3 million player option in 2017-18). Or a player they like with at least one year left on his contract after this season, which would give the Kings some insulation against trading for someone in February who turns around and leaves town in July. Sacramento is said to be seeking a quality young player in return if it parts with Gay. Sacramento Kings forward Rudy Gay is not exactly being shopped, but they are "willing to trade" him, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.
